The First 40 Years The Next 40 Years

The late Rev. Hiram Edmund Smith founded Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church on May 24, 1924. The church's first location was a 10' by 10' room at 1410 Ward Street. Rev. Smith was ordained shortly thereafter on June 20, and the 40 year love affair between pastor and people began.

Because of church growth and greater opportunities, Pastor Smith moved the church’s location several times: first in 1925, then in 1933 and again in 1940. Pastor Smith’s last move led Mount Lebanon to a new location in 1954 as he moved the church to 2320 Reisterstown Road. We would worship and work in this location for the next 34 years.

Unbeknownst to us at the time, the man destined to become our second Pastor, Rev. Olin Preston Moyd, his wife Marie and their four daughters, joined the church in June 1961.

Pastor Smith passed away in May 1964 and in June 1964; Rev. Moyd was elected as Pastor.

Pastor Moyd had a great vision for our church family that carried us into the 21st century. In 1976, he purchased the land on which our current edifice sits, but it was not until 1988 that we finally moved into our multi-million dollar 2812 Reisterstown Road facility. The “new” church comfortably seats almost 1,000 people, has two 10’ by 10’ screens to enhance the worship experience, and a masterful mix of cedar and burgundy appointments which make the sanctuary a beautiful place in which to worship. As a result of Pastor Moyd’s vision and wonderful use of architecture, every seat in Mt. Lebanon is a good seat and each one provides a great view of the pulpit and baptismal pool.

Several modifications have been made to our new edifice including a full service kitchen with a 180 seat capacity dining hall, modern bridal suite and state-of-the-art-media room. In addition, a fully furnished chapel is located in our lower level.

Culminating a yearlong celebration of a man “Faithful Over Forty & Worthy of Double Honor,” Mt. Lebanon hosted Pastor Moyd’s 40th Pastoral Anniversary on July 18, 2004

Years 81 and Beyond

In May 2004, Pastor Moyd began years 81 and beyond by appointing our third Pastor, Rev. Franklin Lance, M.Div. Rev. Lance joined Mt. Lebanon in 1988. He knew he had a calling to preach and gave his initial sermon here in December 1990.

Rev. Lance, his wife, First Lady Benita, and their son, David, continue to lead us in the Smith-Moyd traditions. In January 2005, Pastor Lance was installed as our third Pastor and our period of "Latter Rain" began.

“On Sunday, July 3, 2005, our dearly beloved Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. Olin P. Moyd, Ph.D. of the past 40 years received his eternal reward and went to be at home with the Lord.
